Editorial Standards
If Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff mentions a brand as part of a sponsored post and/or an affiliate program, it will be clearly identified as such. The product has to fit her standards of sustainability—and awesomeness.
How does she determine those standards? In general, she depends on trusted resources like the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) and Environmental Working Group’s Consumer Guides to help guide the decision-making process. When it comes to personal care and cleaning products, she confirms that manufacturers don’t formulate with chemicals on the ever-updating International Chemical Secretariat SIN (Substitute It Now) List or TEDX (The Endocrine Disruption Exchange List of Potential Endocrine Distruptors). Fashion brands show they’re committed to the cause by manufacturing sustainably. She also reserves the right to reject or endorse brands based on gut instinct—it’s usually right.
Why has Rachel sometimes included sponsorship, affiliates and/or advertising? She spent years publishing Mommy Greenest and EcoStiletto and never made a dime—actually, she paid to do it. During that time, sites like these helped a lot of amazing brands get off the ground and Rachel is super proud of that. Today, she spends less time writing about products, and more time writing about important things that people can do to make their lives a little bit healthier. But when she does find products that fit into that construct, she may consider working with the brand—with full disclosure to readers, of course.
