October 2024 Good Newsletter
I've done a lot of things in my life, but never thought I'd host a podcast.
Very grateful to Cascale for giving me the opportunity to help tell the stories of the incredible people working to transform the consumer goods industry into one that gives back more than it takes to people and the planet. First up is Rick Ridgeway, one of the most inspirational human beings I've ever met, let alone interviewed. Click here to listen and subscribe, and I'd love to hear what you think!
(A LOT OF REALLY) GOOD CLIMATE NEWS
Experts are calling this the tipping point for renewables: In 2014, utility-scale solar provided less than one percent of U.S. power -- a decade later, we're at nearly ten percent. In the first six months of this year, utility and rooftop solar power increased by 26 percent and wind and solar produced more power than coal. And California broke records this summer when 100 percent of electricity demand was met by renewables for 100 continuous days.
Thinking about an EV? Ford's now offering a free home charger and installation and, with new GM alignment, Tesla's network just took a giant step towards universal charging. In California, a new bidirectional charging law will enable EVs to power homes and the grid. Soon, batteries will deliver over 600 miles of range and, in the second quarter of 2024, EV sales bumped up 11 percent, devastating naysayers.
GOOD NEWS FOR (BAD) PLASTIC
Everything is awesome: Lego will phase out plastic made from fossil fuels by 2026. New report shows that all Americans -- including a majority of Republicans -- support holding the plastics industry responsible for deceptive marketing of recycling. Parents and teachers, take a look at these awesome resources to host a plastic free lunch day. And could the future of car interiors be plant-based?
GOOD NEWS IN (U.S.) POLITICS
New study shows 40 percent of voters under 35 will only vote for a candidate that prioritizes climate action. Tim Walz is pro-climate; he also named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. Fifty years ago, women were "allowed" to apply for our own credit cards; today, we're voting for a female president. And yes, the top of the ticket is important, but as Sister District shares, it's critical that we research and vote all the way to the end.
